Terribly Important Decisions

Tuesday, October 22

It's about that time of year. The time when we trade our fun flats, handsome heels, and sweet sandals for something slightly less elegant but absolutely necessary if you live in this part of the world: the winter boot. For many years, I've been an Ugg (or some facsimile) girl. Not the most elegant of boots, but oh-so-comfortable. This year, though. This year I decided that I was going to be an ADULT. I was going to buy actual GROWN-UP winter boots. But then I realized that I actually have no idea what grown-up winter boots entail. I mean, I don't want them to be ugly. They may not be the classiest of footwear but a girl can still want to look good, right?

Initially, I was absolutely certain that I wanted Sorels. After all, I'm going to be walking to and from work this winter and the streets of Halifax get slushy. I need something that can withstand the gunk. But then I tried them on. And while I think they're totally cute on other people... I kinda hated the way they looked on me.
So I veered back towards Uggs. Why fix what isn't broke, right? But then the boyfriend reminded me that I'm back in Halifax now - where winters are mostly slush. And the whole reason I wanted Sorels was for the waterproofness - not one of Ugg's key features. So, I went back to the drawing board.
And then... then there were Hunters. Rainboots, yes. But rainboots that have co-ordinating liners to make them warm and cozy. Repellant to the rain and slush. Cozy enough for serious windchill. And in an array of super fun colours. Plus, they're a classic and will last for years... So... what do you think? Have I justified purchasing $200+ rubber boots? I mean... LOOK HOW CUTE THEY ARE:

  1. My husband and several friends have sorels and SWEAR by them; he purchased them a couple of years ago when we were still living downtown and needed to brave the slush each and every winter day, and they've kept his feet dry! Me on the other hand...I can still fit my feet into kid boots, most of which are surprisingly warm and slush-proof.

    1. Oh, good to know. I just wish I liked the way they looked on me! And NICE on the kid boots! They're also probably half the price ;)

  2. I own a pair of the Hunter's and Uggs. I find Uggs do get ruined if you are walking in them for a long time in wet areas and also not completely useful for rain or wet snow. The Hunter's are amazing quality and great in the rain but if the weather dipped below zero I'm not sure how warm they would keep your feet even with the special socks that you can buy. I have also been contemplating the Sorel's as growing up in northern Ontario we lived by that name and they never failed. The good thing is they are much better looking now! Have you thought about going with a sorel with a bit more colour? I think I saw some with red on them, personally I would go with the Sorel's for winter.

    1. Yeah, I found the same thing with my old Uggs - which is partly why I'm hesitant to get them again. The winter rarely gets TOO cold in Hali, it's mostly just gross and slushy but it would be good to check how warm those socks actually are. I may ask around. Still contemplating the Sorels... Thanks for your advice!

  3. There is a another brand of rain boots I like- Kamik. Super cute and only $80. As for winter boots, I wear a pair of hush puppies- they are sleek and stylish, but are SUPER warm and waterproof :) I did find they need new insoles this year- that is my only complaint

In fact- they are still being sold this winter! http://www.softmoc.com/ca/womens/hush-puppies/dress-boots/boot/505389/lds-stylin-tall-black-leather-wtpf-boot
