Layers

I popped into Wicker Emporium last week and noticed these gorgeous rugs were all on sale:

My iPhone couldn't do them justice. The jute and seagrass rugs were stunning in person and the red and amber tones in the Dhurrie rug were so rich. Unfortunately, they were all 5x8 or smaller - not an ideal size for most rooms. But it got me thinking about layering the rugs. Layering is a great idea if you find a rug you love that doesn't come in the size you want - something that's especially common among vintage rugs.

With these beauties, I would layer them almost haphazardly. I would square the natural rug with the room, and layer the rich red rug on an angle over top. Done properly, this can give such depth and dimension to a space. Here are a few spaces that have layered rugs well:

You can also layer rugs by centring a smaller patterned rug on top of a larger natural rug - although I feel like this idea could run the risk of looking too boxy depending on the shape and placement of your furniture. Here are a few that are beautifully executed:

When I was in Wicker, I also spotted this stunning console table, which I think would make the perfect desk (provided you have a laptop or a narrow computer, like the iMac).
